Hamburg, NY Gets Two EV Charging Stations Downtown

Electric vehicle drivers in Hamburg, New York, now have a convenient new place to charge up while they shop or grab a bite downtown.

Two dual-port Level 2 charging stations officially opened last month in the Main and Buffalo streets parking lot, right in the heart of Hamburg's business district. The stations sit across from the Palace Theatre, making them easy to find for locals and visitors alike.

The village approved a $54,645 contract with Lynkwell in April to install the four charging ports. A $38,000 grant from New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation's Municipal Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure program covered most of the cost.

Within the first month of operation, eight unique drivers had already used the chargers. Users can pay through a mobile app or by swiping a credit card at the station, making the process simple for everyone.

The charging stations came about as part of Hamburg's Community HUB project, a larger effort to revitalize the downtown parking area. That project, completed in 2024, added 25 feet to Hamburg Peace Park, installed a pergola and fountain, heated sidewalks, additional landscaping, lighting, and benches.

The Ripple Effect

The charging stations represent more than just a convenience for EV owners. They're helping Hamburg prepare for the future of transportation while supporting local businesses today.

Electric vehicle drivers typically spend 30 to 60 minutes charging, giving them time to explore downtown shops and restaurants they might otherwise drive past. That means more foot traffic and potential customers for Hamburg's local businesses.

The village charges 30 cents per kilowatt hour, with revenue going into a dedicated account to offset the electricity costs. Village Administrator Jason Cozza noted that usage has been steady and positive since launch.

New York State's push to expand EV infrastructure is making charging more accessible across smaller communities, not just major cities. Hamburg's successful installation shows how even modest-sized villages can participate in the clean energy transition.

The stations are powered by renewable energy sources and help reduce transportation emissions in the region. As more drivers consider switching to electric vehicles, knowing charging options exist in places like Hamburg makes that decision easier.

Downtown Hamburg just became a little more welcoming for the growing number of New Yorkers choosing electric transportation.
