Harley-Davidson's electric motorcycle brand just made its boldest move yet, revealing that its new S4 Honcho will cost just $4,999 for the trail version and $5,499 for the street-legal model. That's thousands less than analysts predicted and positions electric motorcycles as real competition against gas-powered bikes like the Honda Grom.

The timing couldn't be better. For years, electric motorcycles carried luxury price tags that kept most riders on the sidelines, even as smaller gas bikes dominated city streets and weekend trails.

Both versions of the S4 Honcho pack enough punch for daily adventures with a 59 mph top speed and zippy 3-second acceleration from 0 to 30 mph. The removable batteries deliver about 53 miles of mixed riding, and you can charge them from any standard wall outlet in two hours.

The real difference between the two models comes down to where you can ride them. The Trail version weighs 253 pounds and handles off-road adventures, while the Street version adds street-legal features, weighs 266 pounds, and comes with a two-year unlimited mileage warranty instead of one year.
