Hawaii Fishing Tournament Raises $10K for Families

A fishing tournament designed by women for women just proved that friendly competition can make waves of change in Hawaii.

The Wahine Marlin Tournament made its comeback last August in Kailua-Kona after a five-year pandemic pause, drawing 48 all-female teams to the island's stunning waters. Tournament organizers Brent Hawley and director Barbie Nakamura brought back the beloved event with a mission: donate most proceeds to Family Support Hawaii, a nonprofit serving thousands of Big Island families each year.

On January 30, Reel Escapes Hawaii presented a $10,000 check to the charity. The remaining funds went to tournament prizes, keeping the event competitive while prioritizing community impact.

"This tournament was put together by women for women to raise money for families in our community," said Hawley, owner of Reel Escapes Hawaii charter company. The duo heard countless stories from harbor regulars who missed the tournament's signature party atmosphere and family-friendly vibe.

Unlike the island's more serious marlin competitions, the Wahine Tournament focuses on fun first. The 2026 event kicks off August 1 with a boat decoration parade and water fight at Kailua Pier before teams head out fishing.

The Ripple Effect

The tournament's return signals more than just good times on the water. Family Support Hawaii provides crucial intervention and prevention services to families across the Big Island, and organizers plan to expand their charitable reach in coming years.

Future tournaments will continue supporting Family Support Hawaii while potentially adding other local charities to the mix. Registration opens March 1, with sponsors like Kona Brewing Company and Ironman already backing the cause.

Hawley's message to potential participants captures the event's spirit: it's about women gathering to make new friends, reconnect with familiar faces, and enjoy themselves while lifting up their community.
