HCU Beach Volleyball Upsets Two Top Seeds in One Day

The fourth-seeded Houston Christian Huskies shocked the Southland Conference tournament Thursday, knocking out two higher-ranked opponents in a single day to keep their championship dreams alive.

Playing at Water's Edge Park in Corpus Christi, Texas, HCU first swept sixth-seeded Stephen F. Austin 3-0 before facing their toughest test of the day. The Huskies had lost to third-seeded McNeese earlier this season, making their revenge victory even sweeter.

Grace Melnick and Paige Palmer opened the tournament with a hard-fought win on Court 1, taking their match 21-19, 21-16. Teammates Alexa Landmark and Lauren Vickery battled through three sets to secure another point for the Huskies.

Hannah Foor and Olivia Zeigler then sealed the sweep against Stephen F. Austin with a dominant 21-10, 21-8 performance on Court 2.

The afternoon match against McNeese tested the team's resilience. After Landmark and Vickery grabbed the first point in three sets, McNeese evened the score. Foor and Zeigler stepped up again, winning 21-18, 21-12 to put HCU ahead 2-1.

With the match tied at two points each, Sophia Sabol and Dariya Tlevlessova delivered the clinching performance on Court 4, winning 21-17, 21-19 to send their teammates rushing onto the sand in celebration.

The Bright Side

The Huskies entered the tournament with a 12-23 record, far from championship favorites. But sports aren't played on paper, and Thursday proved that heart and preparation can overcome any seeding.

The team's double victory keeps them in contention alongside top-seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and second-seeded Southeastern. For a program building its competitive foundation, reaching the final four represents a milestone achievement that will energize recruiting and community support for years to come.

HCU faces second-seeded Southeastern Friday morning at 9:00 a.m., with the winner advancing to the championship match against the Islanders. Regardless of Friday's outcome, the Huskies have already proven they belong among the conference's elite.
