Hero on Dialysis Saves Sisters from Burning Texas Crash

Mario Carrillo spotted smoke rising from Interstate 27 in Lubbock and made a split-second decision that would change three lives forever. He leaped from his truck and ran toward a burning vehicle where sisters Aaliyah and Alexis Wallace were trapped.

"One was already out of the truck and I believe the other one was trying to get out," Carrillo said. He and two other Good Samaritans, Sunny Davila and Brandon Bergaro, pulled both sisters to safety moments before the flames intensified.

The three men didn't just rescue and run. They visited Aaliyah and Alexis in the hospital, wanting to replace the fear they'd seen in the sisters' eyes with comfort and hope.

That's when the sisters learned something that made their rescue even more remarkable. Carrillo has been on dialysis for four years, waiting for a kidney donor.

"They were willing to run up to the truck that could have blown up to grab us," Aaliyah said. "All of them have kids, wives, families."

Why This Inspires

Carrillo brought his own wife, who had also survived a crash, to the hospital to encourage the sisters. He carried a cross as a symbol of hope, showing that even while fighting his own health battle, his first instinct was to care for others.

The sisters now have a new mission. "He saved us, we want to save him," Alexis said simply.

They're working to help Carrillo find a kidney donor, turning their gratitude into action. It's a beautiful circle of compassion that started with three strangers who chose to run toward danger instead of away from it.

Carrillo remains hopeful and grateful. "I'm hoping, with the grace of God, I'll find one here pretty soon," he said.
