High School Senior Becomes Charleston's All-Time Rusher

A high school running back in Charleston, Illinois just achieved something only a handful of athletes ever will: a permanent place in his school's record books.

Treylin Couch became Charleston High School's all-time leading rusher during a Week Four game against Effingham this September. The senior now has 2,497 career rushing yards, surpassing a record that stood for years.

The achievement came during a 231-yard, four-touchdown performance, even though Charleston lost 44-27. Through just four games this season, Couch ranks second in Illinois with 804 rushing yards according to the state high school athletics association.

For Couch, this wasn't just about statistics. He says the record has been on his mind since he became a starter as a sophomore, fueling every practice and every carry.

"Feels amazing to be able to break a record that not a lot of people have," Couch said. "Individually, it was a life goal for me to be able to break a record that only a couple of people can break in a lifetime."

Why This Inspires

Head coach Brian Halsey says the record reflects something bigger than athletic talent. "I'm so proud of his individual growth," Halsey said. "He's an absolute gentleman, he has manners, he's polite, he is a leader. I couldn't be more proud of him as a player and as a man, and I tell him that every day."

That character-first approach makes this achievement even more meaningful. In a world that often celebrates raw talent alone, Couch represents the power of setting long-term goals and working steadily toward them with humility and dedication.

The recognition keeps growing too. Couch was named WCIA Athlete of the Week, making him eligible for a $1,500 cash prize awarded at the end of the school year.
