Hiker, 61, Resets Own Shoulder and Summits Mount Washington

When 61-year-old Kurt Siuzdak slipped on wet granite during his Mount Washington climb, he didn't let a dislocated shoulder stop him from reaching the top.

The Connecticut resident started his hike at 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, tackling one of New Hampshire's most challenging peaks. Six hours into his climb, he fell on a wet granite slab near the Lakes of the Clouds section, dislocating his shoulder and injuring his back.

About a mile and a half from the summit, Siuzdak faced a choice. He decided to keep going, moving slowly and steadily upward despite the pain.

At some point during his continued climb, he managed to reset his dislocated shoulder himself. Five hours after his fall, another hiker found him still making progress toward the peak.

When two New Hampshire Fish and Game officers hiked down to meet him around 5 p.m., Siuzdak was still climbing at a careful pace. Together, the three continued upward until Siuzdak reached the summit under his own power.

After medical personnel evaluated him at the top, he asked for a ride to his car so he could drive himself to urgent care. His 13-hour ordeal from start to finish showed both grit and smart planning.
