Hikers Survive 400-Meter Fall in Poland's Tatra Mountains

Against all odds, a hiker who tumbled 400 meters down a steep, frozen mountain slope in Poland survived to tell the tale.

Two men were descending a high mountain pass in the Western Tatras near the Slovakian border Sunday evening when they slipped on ice and began falling. One hiker managed to stop himself after about 100 meters, but his friend kept sliding down the treacherous terrain.

The first hiker called the Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service (TOPR) around 6 p.m. but had lost all contact with his companion. Within minutes, 20 rescuers mobilized for what would become a race against darkness and dropping temperatures.

The team traveled by car as far as possible before hiking into the remote mountain terrain. Using a drone equipped with thermal imaging, they scanned the steep slopes for any sign of life in the freezing darkness.

Around 400 meters below the trail, the thermal camera picked up a heat signature. The second hiker was alive but injured, stranded on terrain so steep that rescuers needed ropes just to reach him.

The first hiker walked back to safety in good condition. His friend wasn't as fortunate but was treated on site for head and upper body injuries before being carefully evacuated by stretcher and rope system.

The entire rescue operation wrapped up around 3 a.m., nine hours after the initial call.

The Bright Side

Both men survived what could have easily been a fatal accident, and their story carries an important safety message. The rescuers revealed that the hikers had relied on Google Maps for navigation and brought no winter equipment despite icy conditions.

"The hiker who fell nearly 400 meters can consider himself incredibly lucky," TOPR wrote in their incident report. Recent weather patterns had created especially dangerous conditions, with a thaw followed by hard frost turning the snow into sheets of ice.

The rescue service used the incident as a teaching moment, reminding mountain visitors that proper preparation saves lives. In winter conditions, hikers need crampons for traction, ice axes for stability, and helmets for protection.

These two hikers got a second chance most people don't receive after such a dramatic fall. Their survival stands as both a miracle and a reminder that mountains demand respect, especially in winter.
