Hitachi Invests $528M in Mississippi, Creates 654 Jobs

Hitachi Energy just committed $528 million to expand its transformer manufacturing operations in Copiah County, Mississippi, creating 654 well-paying jobs in a move that marks the company's biggest investment in American soil.

The Japanese energy infrastructure giant chose Mississippi over anywhere else in the country for this massive expansion. Construction on the new 45-acre facility in Gallman begins later this year, with production starting in 2029.

The project comes at a critical moment for America's power grid. Utilities, manufacturers, and data centers are scrambling to add electrical capacity, driving unprecedented demand for transformers and grid equipment that keeps the lights on and the economy running.

Hitachi already employs 475 workers in Copiah County making small power transformers. This expansion will more than double that workforce, transforming the company into one of the county's largest employers and strengthening Mississippi's reputation as a manufacturing destination.

Governor Tate Reeves announced the project at the G20 Summit in Houston alongside federal cabinet members and Japanese officials. "Hitachi Energy could've made its largest investment in America anywhere in the country, but the company chose Mississippi," he said.

The Ripple Effect

This win extends far beyond 654 new paychecks. Copiah County is experiencing a manufacturing renaissance, with multiple major companies choosing to invest and expand there in recent years.

The timing couldn't be better for American energy security. "Demand for electricity is growing rapidly, and the grid must grow with it," said Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck. Producing these critical transformers domestically strengthens supply chains and reduces dependence on foreign manufacturing.

Mississippi's economic development strategy is paying dividends. State leaders have focused on attracting advanced manufacturing and energy infrastructure projects that offer higher wages and long-term stability, moving beyond traditional industries.

The project represents something economic developers love to see: an existing employer choosing to expand rather than relocate. That's a vote of confidence in Mississippi's business climate, workforce, and future.

State workforce programs will help train workers for these new positions, ensuring local residents have pathways to careers in advanced manufacturing. The Mississippi Development Authority is supporting the project through tax incentives and infrastructure improvements, with Copiah County also contributing.
