Hitachi Vantara Targets Net Zero by 2040 with SBTi Approval

Hitachi Vantara is racing toward net zero emissions 10 years ahead of most corporate climate pledges, with a comprehensive plan that just earned approval from the Science Based Targets initiative. The data storage and cloud management company announced it will eliminate greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2040.

The commitment comes as AI and data demands explode worldwide, creating an urgent need for tech companies to build smarter, cleaner infrastructure. Hitachi Vantara is tackling the challenge head-on with targets that go far beyond typical corporate climate promises.

By 2030, the company plans to cut its direct emissions by 98% compared to 2024 levels. That's just six years to nearly eliminate the carbon footprint from its own operations.

The company is already delivering results. In 2025 alone, Hitachi Vantara slashed its direct emissions by 43% by sourcing half its energy from renewable sources.

The plan also addresses the trickier challenge of supply chain emissions, which most companies struggle to control. Hitachi Vantara committed to reducing these indirect emissions by 51% per unit of storage sold by 2036, climbing to 97% by 2040.

Simon Ninan, who leads business strategy at the company, says customers are demanding this kind of accountability. Technology buyers increasingly want proof that their suppliers take climate action seriously, not just marketing talk.

The Ripple Effect

This commitment reaches far beyond one company's carbon footprint. As Hitachi Vantara builds more efficient data infrastructure, its customers gain tools to shrink their own environmental impact while cutting power and cooling costs.

The SBTi validation adds crucial credibility to these promises. Unlike self-reported goals, SBTi targets must align with the latest climate science showing what's needed to limit global warming.

Courtney Hadden, the company's sustainability director, emphasized that independent validation creates a clear framework for measuring progress. Strong governance and reliable data will keep the company accountable through 2040 and beyond.

The tech industry faces mounting pressure to reconcile explosive growth in AI and data services with the urgent need to reduce emissions. Hitachi Vantara is proving that ambitious climate action and cutting-edge technology can advance together, not at odds.
