Hobart's Free E-Bike Library Boosts Sales by 20%

Imagine test-driving a car for two weeks before buying it. That's exactly what Hobart, Tasmania is doing with e-bikes, and the results are pedaling far beyond expectations.

The City of Hobart launched a free e-bike library last May, letting anyone in Tasmania borrow one of 12 electric bikes for two weeks at no cost. Borrowers simply fill out a digital form, choose their preferred model, pay a refundable $500 bond, and ride off into their daily routine.

One year later, the numbers tell a compelling story. More than 144 people have borrowed bikes, collectively riding over 10,000 kilometers around the city. Local e-bike retailers report that 20% of their cargo bike purchasers tried the bikes through the library first.

Jon Leighton from Lenah Valley is one of those success stories. He used to drive his car or struggle up Hobart's steep hills on a regular bike, especially when carrying shopping or work equipment. The two-week trial gave him something a quick shop test ride never could: real-world proof that an e-bike would work in his actual life.

Now Leighton owns his own e-bike and has cut his fuel and parking costs while improving his mental health. He made an informed choice instead of an expensive gamble.

The Ripple Effect

The benefits extend far beyond individual riders. Councillor Ryan Posselt, who chairs the council's Transport Committee, explains that getting people out of cars frees up limited road space for everyone. Cyclists and pedestrians also spend more money at local cafes, shops, and bars than drivers do, activating street life and supporting small businesses.

Other cities with similar programs report that 70 to 80% of library users eventually purchase their own e-bikes. Hobart is collecting data to see if it matches those benchmarks, though early retailer reports suggest it's on track.

The Tasmanian government funds the program through Community Climate Change Action Grants, and the City of Hobart has committed to continuing it. The library initially doubled its fleet due to popular demand, and that momentum shows no signs of slowing.
