Homeless Man Stops to Help Stranded Ice Cream Truck Owners

When Jessica and Michael Walters' ice cream truck broke down on Highway 24 late Saturday night, dozens of drivers honked and gestured as they sped by. Only one person stopped to help, and his kindness left the Topeka couple searching for him ever since.

The Walters run Snack Shuttle, a scrappy ice cream business they built from scratch two years ago. Jessica started with a single freezer from Facebook Marketplace, some printed signs, and one box of ice cream.

They converted an old ambulance into their mobile shop, though the aging vehicle struggles to keep up with their growing business. "It needs help, it needs work, and we're so busy trying to scale the business just to be relevant in the food truck industry," Michael said.

After wrapping up a successful birthday party gig on August 22, the couple headed home when their truck died on the highway. "There's a parade of fingers and horn honking going by us. I'm like, 'Oh, my God,'" Michael recalled.

That's when a white pickup truck with orange decals pulled in front of them. The driver, who told the Walters he was homeless, blocked traffic to make their breakdown visible to other cars. He offered whatever help he could provide with the resources he had.
