Film buffs across Hong Kong have a date circled on their calendars: April 25, when movie tickets drop to just HK$30 (about US$3.80) at 53 theaters citywide.

Cinema Day 2026 marks the fourth year of this wildly popular initiative, sponsored by Hong Kong's Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency. The numbers tell an impressive story of success.

Over the past three years, more than 600,000 people have rushed to theaters on Cinema Day, generating HK$44 million in box office revenue. That's triple the usual number of moviegoers on a typical day, according to the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau.

The discount is dramatic. At MCL Cinema's Causeway Bay location, regular adult tickets cost HK$110. Cinema Day tickets represent a 73% savings, making the magic of the big screen accessible to everyone regardless of budget.

Tickets go on sale at noon on April 22, giving eager moviegoers a three-day window to snag their seats. With nearly 39,400 cinema seats across the city as of March, there's plenty of room for film lovers to find their perfect screening.
