Hong Kong Expands Care for Dementia Patients and Caregivers

Hong Kong is taking a major step to protect its most vulnerable seniors by expanding who gets priority community care and support visits.

The city's welfare department announced it will revise screening criteria to include dementia patients and residents over 60 who care for people with severe disabilities. Previously, the system primarily flagged people based on age alone, missing many high-risk situations.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han described caregiving for a spouse with dementia as "one of the most challenging" scenarios families face. He emphasized that dementia cases must be prioritized moving forward.

The policy review comes after a heartbreaking incident in Kwai Chung, where a 70-year-old man caring for his wife was found in crisis. Neither had been identified for support visits because housing records showed both were under 80, despite their urgent needs.

This change represents government officials actually listening and responding when systems fail real people. Rather than defending existing protocols, welfare leaders acknowledged the gaps and committed to fixing them.

The initiative launched last year already provides targeted visits and follow-up support from social workers. Now those resources will reach families who need them most, regardless of whether they've crossed an arbitrary age threshold.
