Hong Kong Hosts Europe-Wide Hackathon for 1,200 Innovators

Hong Kong is rolling out the red carpet for Europe's brightest tech minds, and they're responding in droves.

Hong Kong Talent Engage wrapped up a four-day mission to Germany and France this month, bringing together 250 finalists from across Europe for an intense 30-hour hackathon. Director Felix Chan presented awards to 16 winners who competed in categories ranging from FinTech and HealthTech to Smart City solutions and AI robotics.

The competition drew about 1,200 applications from young innovators across the continent. Finalists pitched their ideas to judges from Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, Cyberport, and local I&T experts, competing for a chance to explore real opportunities in one of Asia's most dynamic tech ecosystems.

Chan emphasized Hong Kong's unique position as a gateway between East and West. The city offers strong backing from mainland China while maintaining close global connections, and sits at the heart of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, home to over 86 million people and some of the world's fastest-growing tech companies.

The Ripple Effect

This hackathon builds on last year's successful pilot program with German startups. Those winners visited Hong Kong and Shenzhen and unanimously praised the trip for opening their eyes to the region's thriving innovation scene, with many actively planning their move.

This year's expanded program reflects growing European interest in Asian markets. The 16 new winners will tour Hong Kong and other Greater Bay Area cities this September, meeting investors, exploring incubator programs, and scoping out spaces where their ideas could take flight.

Hong Kong isn't just hosting competitions; it's building bridges. The city has introduced streamlined talent admission schemes specifically designed to attract global innovators, removing bureaucratic barriers that often slow ambitious entrepreneurs.

The delegation is now in Paris for two days of meetups with French I&T entrepreneurs, continuing to spread the word about opportunities waiting across the Pacific.

For young Europeans with big ideas and bigger dreams, Hong Kong is proving that the best launchpad for a global startup might be halfway around the world.
