Hong Kong Opens Dog-Friendly Restaurant Program in May

Dog owners in Hong Kong will soon be able to bring their furry friends along for dinner, thanks to a new program launching this month.

The city's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced that restaurants can apply from May 18 through June 8 to become officially licensed dog-friendly venues. Successful applicants will be able to welcome canine guests starting in July.

The first phase caps participation at 1,000 restaurants. If more eateries apply than available spots, the department will use a lottery system to determine which venues get approved.

To qualify, restaurants must be larger than 20 square meters (about 215 square feet). The program excludes hotpot, teppanyaki, and barbecue restaurants for safety reasons, since these venues involve open flames or hot surfaces at tables.

Getting the dog-admission endorsement added to an existing food business license costs just HK$140, or about US$18. That small fee opens the door to a whole new customer base of pet owners who currently have limited dining options with their dogs.
