Hong Kong Student Becomes Top Scorer After Biology Remark

Sometimes taking a chance on yourself makes all the difference. Sunny Sun trusted her instincts when she requested her biology exam be remarked, and that decision transformed her into one of Hong Kong's top university entrance exam scorers.

The 18-year-old from N.T. Heung Yee Kuk Yuen Long District Secondary School originally received perfect scores in every subject except biology. Even though she'd consistently topped her biology class all year, she fell just short of the highest grade.

"I was thinking I might take a chance and request a remark to see if I could bump it up," Sun explained. Her appeal succeeded, upgrading her biology score and making her the 25th student this year to achieve perfect marks across the board.

Sun had already secured her dream spot at the University of Hong Kong's medicine program before the remarking results came through. The early admission recognized her exceptional talents beyond test scores.

Her study secrets are refreshingly simple. Sun reads her textbooks aloud to help information stick, a technique she swears by for memorization. She also credits her school's debate team with sharpening her English skills and confidence.

Sun led her school to victory in Hong Kong's inter-school English debating championship two years running. She balanced these achievements while serving as student association chairwoman and flag guard member.

Sun entered high school in 2020, right when COVID-19 forced classes online and created massive learning challenges. While many students struggled with remote education, she consistently ranked first in her year from Form One through Form Three.

Her principal, Yuen Kwong-yip, still marvels at her sustained excellence during such difficult circumstances. Sun became only the third perfect scorer in her school's entire history.
