Hong Kong's New Innovation School Graduates First Class

Students at the University of Hong Kong are bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world innovation, and the results are already making waves in the city's tech scene.

The university celebrated the first anniversary of its School of Innovation this month, marking a full year since the first cohort of Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Technology students began their studies in September 2025. The school itself launched in November 2024 with a bold mission: prepare the next generation to tackle complex challenges through hands-on collaboration with industry.

Since classes began, students haven't just been hitting the books. They've visited Hong Kong Science Park, explored the HKU Techno-Entrepreneurship Academy in Shenzhen, and toured Tencent's facilities. They've also partnered with the Hong Kong Science Museum, Hong Kong Shipowners Association, and Food Angel to work on real community challenges.

"The opening of the HKU School of Innovation marks a significant milestone for Hong Kong's innovation and technology development," said Lillian Cheong Man-lei, under secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry. She highlighted how the school transforms bold ideas into real-world impact.

University President Xiang Zhang emphasized that the school plays a strategic role in advancing interdisciplinary learning. Terry Wong Ping-sau, CEO of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, called the partnership between universities and industry vital for Hong Kong's tech future.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT

The school's approach is creating innovators who think differently. Director Hayden So explained that students develop self-motivation, agility, and compassion as they pursue their passions across diverse fields.

"Once they are motivated, they will pursue their passions across diverse fields throughout their innovation journey," So said. The goal isn't just to teach technical skills but to shape mindsets ready for tomorrow's challenges.

The program aligns with Hong Kong's broader vision to become both an international education hub and an innovation powerhouse. James Tang, Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee, noted that the school demonstrates a clear commitment to nurturing interdisciplinary expertise and entrepreneurial thinking.

Looking ahead, the School of Innovation plans to expand its offerings with a master's program launching next year, creating even more pathways for students passionate about making a difference through technology and innovation.
