Pikachu Spends 67 Days on Space Station in ESA Partnership

A Pikachu plush toy just completed 1,040 orbits around Earth, and the partnership behind it might spark a whole new generation of space enthusiasts.

The European Space Agency and The Pokémon Company International joined forces to celebrate World Space Week 2026, sending the electric mouse mascot to the International Space Station from April 11 to June 17. Pikachu floated alongside seven human astronauts, including ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, during its 67 days in orbit.

The collaboration goes far beyond a cute photo opportunity. Starting this fall, interactive exhibitions will pop up at ESA facilities and major museums throughout Europe, blending space exploration with the Pokémon experience that millions of fans already love.

"Inspiring future generations is a key part of ESA's mission," ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher explained. The partnership aims to reach young people where they already are, using familiar characters to unlock curiosity about the universe.

The exhibitions launch during ESA Open Days 2026, running from September through October at locations in Paris, Rome, Noordwijk, Darmstadt, Villanueva de la Cañada, and Harwell. Visitors will explore how Europe launches missions, supports astronauts, studies the sun, and investigates our solar system through themed Pokémon character panels.

The Ripple Effect

This creative approach to science education could open doors for kids who never considered space careers. By meeting young people in a world they already love, ESA is lowering the barrier between childhood wonder and real scientific discovery.

The partnership extends into the digital realm too. Pokémon GO players visiting participating science and space museums will encounter special gameplay featuring Astronaut Pikachu from October 2026 through April 2027, turning museum visits into adventures.

Exclusive ESA x Pokémon merchandise will be available through agency and Pokémon retail channels, with proceeds supporting both organizations' educational missions. The exhibition will travel to venues and special events across Europe through April 2027.

"Every Pokémon journey begins with a sense of wonder about what lies beyond the world you know," said Mathieu Galante of The Pokémon Company International. That same sense of wonder powers every astronaut's first look at the stars.
