Hot Rods Honor Cancer Survivors with Special Jersey Night

When the Bowling Green Hot Rods took the field on June 13, the names stitched on their jerseys told stories of courage that had nothing to do with baseball.

The minor league team hosted Cancer Awareness Night, where players wore jerseys featuring the names of local cancer survivors and people affected by the disease. After the final out, they met face to face with the people whose journeys they honored.

"The fact that they're going to be here supporting us, like I want to be there, supporting them and be a part of their journey now because it's now that I'm wearing their last name," said Hot Rods outfielder Theo Gillen.

For Melodie Tunney, the timing couldn't have been more meaningful. She attended the game just weeks after completing chemotherapy and ringing the bell that marked the end of her treatment for ovarian cancer.

"When they were doing the starting lineup and calling the people's last names, I teared up because I could relate to every name that was on the back of a shirt," Tunney said. She received news of her remission just a couple weeks before the game.

Ann Willis, another survivor in attendance, saw the night as a chance to offer hope to others facing their own battles. "I just hope that I can be an inspiration for others," she said. "Let them know that there are people out there that have been through it and can be there for you."

Vince Perriello, a 25-year survivor, said the gathering brought unexpected emotions. "It took me by surprise," he said. "It's really sort of awful that so many of us have gone through this, but great that we've gotten through it."

Why This Inspires

The night showed how sports can create powerful moments of connection beyond the scoreboard. Players and survivors stood together as teammates in a different kind of game, one where simply showing up and supporting each other counts as a win.

Tunney said the experience reminded her she's part of something bigger than her individual fight. "I am in a fellowship with a wonderful group of people who have fought and like I've fought, and here I am."

Sometimes the most important names on a jersey aren't the ones in the record books.
