Hubble Captures Clearest View Yet of the Egg Nebula

A dying star is putting on one of the most beautiful light shows in our galaxy, and we just got front-row seats.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured the clearest image yet of the Egg Nebula, a celestial structure that looks exactly like its name suggests. Released on February 10, 2026, the new photo reveals swirling clouds of gas and dust illuminated by starlight in the constellation Cygnus, about 1,000 light-years from Earth.

At the heart of this cosmic egg sits a Sun-like star nearing the end of its life, hidden behind a thick blanket of dust. The dying star has been shedding its outer layers, creating a dense cloud that astronomers compare to a yolk wrapped in an opaque egg white.

What makes this nebula special is its youth and proximity. The Egg Nebula holds the record as the first, youngest, and closest pre-planetary nebula ever discovered by scientists.

Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 made these latest observations possible, capturing details never seen before. The images show a dramatic dance of light and shadow as beams from the central star pierce through gaps in the surrounding dust cloud.
