Hugo Broos Retires After Leading South Africa to World Cup

Hugo Broos just walked away from coaching on the highest note imaginable, taking South Africa places they'd never been before.

The 74-year-old Belgian coach officially retired from his role with Bafana Bafana in July, turning down a contract extension to enjoy a well-earned rest. His decision came one month after achieving something no South African coach had done in the country's football history.

Under Broos's guidance, South Africa reached the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the very first time. The team advanced to the round of 32 at the tournament in North America, breaking through a barrier that had stood for decades.

But that wasn't his only triumph. In 2023, Broos led Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations, their best performance since winning the entire tournament on home soil in 1996.

The South African Football Association wanted him to stay through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. However, Broos had already hinted before the World Cup that retirement was calling his name.

"It's been a great honour to lead this team," Broos said in his farewell statement. Those words carry extra weight coming from a coach who previously won the African Cup of Nations with Cameroon in 2019.
