Hungary Wins First World Cup Game in 28 Years

After 28 years of waiting, Hungary's women's basketball team finally tasted victory again at the World Cup, and they did it in record-breaking fashion.

Dorka Juhasz and Virag Takacs-Kiss dominated the court in Berlin, combining for 36 points and an incredible 30 rebounds to lead Hungary past Nigeria. Their rebound total broke a World Cup record that had stood since 1994, when Russian teammates managed 28 rebounds together.

The win came just one day after Hungary suffered a crushing 99-53 defeat to France in their opening game. But inspired by their passionate fans who filled the arena, the team found their fire.

"The way they showed up and supported us yesterday even with a huge loss, it felt like home," said Takacs-Kiss, who scored 17 points. "It was amazing and I had goosebumps."

Juhasz emerged as the star Hungary needed, completely taking over from the opening tip. The forward finished with 19 points and 16 rebounds, repeatedly powering through Nigeria's defense and controlling the paint at both ends of the floor.

Hungary's 42 paint points and 38 defensive rebounds kept Nigeria at arm's length throughout the second half. Every time Nigeria tried to mount a comeback, Hungary's interior dominance shut the door.

This victory means everything to a nation that hasn't celebrated a World Cup win since 1998, when they reached the semifinals. Ranked 19th in the world against 8th-ranked Nigeria, Hungary proved that heart and home support can overcome odds.
