Hypersonic Test Plane Hits 10 Successful Flights

Flying faster than a speeding bullet just became routine.

California-based Stratolaunch announced its Talon-A hypersonic vehicle has completed more than 10 successful test flights. The reusable, autonomous craft travels at speeds exceeding Mach 5, which means it moves through the atmosphere faster than five times the speed of sound.

"We are transforming hypersonic testing from a rare event into a routine service," said Stratolaunch President Zachary Krevor. His team's achievement marks a turning point in making advanced aerospace testing accessible and frequent.

Here's how it works: Talon-A starts its journey tucked beneath a carrier plane. Stratolaunch uses either a modified Boeing 747 called Spirit of Mojave or Roc, a custom-built giant with the biggest wingspan in aviation history at 385 feet tip to tip.

The carrier planes take off from Mojave Air and Space Port in southeastern California. They drop Talon-A over the Pacific Ocean, where it screams through the sky at hypersonic speeds before returning for a runway landing, usually at Vandenberg Space Force Base on California's central coast.

Each Talon-A vehicle stretches 28 feet long with an 11-foot wingspan. During flights, they test cutting-edge sensors and advanced materials in extreme conditions that are impossible to replicate on the ground.

Stratolaunch's customers include the U.S. Missile Defense Agency and other military organizations exploring hypersonic technology. These superfast, maneuverable vehicles help researchers understand flight conditions that traditional testing can't achieve.

The Ripple Effect

Making hypersonic testing routine changes everything for aerospace innovation. What once required years of planning and massive budgets can now happen more frequently and affordably.

Stratolaunch isn't alone in this new frontier. Rocket Lab operates HASTE, a hypersonic testing service that has completed nine flights and recently secured a $190 million contract for 20 missions with the U.S. military.

The competition signals growing momentum in an industry that barely existed a few years ago. As these companies prove their technology works reliably, researchers gain unprecedented access to test conditions that push the boundaries of flight.

Double-digit successful flights means the era of routine hypersonic testing has officially arrived.
