Hyundai and Kia Hit 9 Million Green Vehicles Sold

🤯 Mind Blown

Hyundai and Kia are on track to sell their 10 millionth eco-friendly vehicle this year, just 18 years after launching their first hybrid. The milestone shows how betting on both hybrids and electric vehicles can create real momentum in the shift away from gas-powered cars.

Two Korean automakers are proving that the future of transportation doesn't have to wait for everyone to agree on one solution.

Hyundai and Kia reached 9.2 million eco-friendly vehicle sales worldwide by mid-2024, putting them on pace to cross 10 million by year's end. That's a remarkable achievement considering they sold just 6,312 green vehicles in their first year back in 2009.

The secret to their success? They didn't put all their eggs in one basket. While other manufacturers went all-in on electric vehicles or stuck stubbornly to gas engines, Hyundai and Kia expanded both their hybrid and EV lineups simultaneously.

Hybrids led the charge with 5.6 million sales, accounting for more than 60 percent of their eco-friendly total. The Tucson Hybrid topped the charts with over 854,000 units sold, followed closely by the Niro Hybrid with 805,000.

But electric vehicles are far from an afterthought. The companies sold over 330,000 EVs in the first half of 2024 alone, a 27 percent jump from the previous year. The Ioniq 5 became their bestselling electric model with more than 511,000 units sold since launch.

The growth keeps accelerating. In 2022, the automakers sold 1 million eco-friendly vehicles for the first time. This year, they're expected to sell over 2 million, meaning more than one in four of their cars worldwide will be hybrid, electric, or hydrogen-powered.

The Ripple Effect

This dual approach is changing how people think about going green. Shoppers who aren't ready for a full electric vehicle can start with a hybrid, reducing emissions without range anxiety. Meanwhile, expanding EV options gives early adopters more choices at different price points.

The strategy is working especially well in the U.S., where Kia has become known as a brand that sells without heavy discounts. Their average incentive per vehicle was $2,550, about $1,100 less than Hyundai's and well below the industry average. Lower discounts create a cycle of better resale values, making eco-friendly vehicles more affordable in the long run.

Hyundai and Kia aren't stopping at 10 million. They're launching extended-range electric vehicles that combine batteries with small generators, targeting over 80,000 annual sales in North America alone. New models like the Ioniq 3 for Europe and the electric GV90 SUV keep expanding options for different markets and budgets.

By meeting customers where they are rather than demanding they choose one technology, these automakers are making sustainable transportation accessible to millions who might otherwise stick with gas.
