Hyundai Starts Affordable EV Production in Turkey

Hyundai's newest electric vehicle rolled off the assembly line in Turkey last week, bringing affordable zero-emission driving within reach for everyday buyers.

The IONIQ 3 is Hyundai's smallest electric car yet, designed specifically for European drivers who want clean transportation without breaking the bank. Starting at just £22,245 ($30,000) in the UK, it's positioned to compete directly with Chinese automakers who've been flooding Europe with budget-friendly EVs.

The Korean automaker celebrated the production launch at its Izmit plant in Turkey with a special ceremony on Friday. Hyundai invested $290 million to upgrade the facility for electric vehicle manufacturing, modernizing about half the plant to accommodate the new production line.

The compact hatchback comes with two battery options: a standard 42.2 kWh pack offering 213 miles of range, or an extended 61 kWh battery delivering 308 miles. Both versions can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes using DC fast charging, making road trips and daily commutes equally practical.

Hyundai will initially build 30,000 IONIQ 3 vehicles each year at the Turkish facility. Sales begin in September across Europe, with the car rolling out to additional markets throughout the year.

The timing couldn't be more strategic. Small cars make up 15% of European vehicle sales, but only 14% of those are currently electric. Industry experts predict that number will jump to 65% by 2035 as more affordable options hit the market.

The Ripple Effect

The IONIQ 3's arrival signals a turning point in electric vehicle accessibility. For years, EVs remained luxury purchases, but competitive pricing from new players pushed established automakers to respond with genuinely affordable options.

Hyundai's CEO personally visited the Turkish plant before launch, emphasizing quality and safety above all else. His goal: make the IONIQ 3 "the best vehicle in Europe" in its class. That kind of commitment from leadership often translates to better products on dealer lots.

The car comes loaded with Hyundai's new smartphone-like infotainment system, complete with an AI assistant and customizable screens up to 14.6 inches. Despite its compact exterior, it boasts 441 liters of cargo space, setting a new benchmark for small electric hatchbacks.

Clean transportation is finally becoming a realistic choice for middle-class families across Europe.
