
IIT Delhi Startup Puts AI in Drones, Satellites, Sensors
An IIT Delhi spinoff is solving one of AI's biggest problems: making it work where there's no internet, no server, and barely any power. Their brain-inspired chips are already catching the eye of defense giants and France's Safran.
Most AI today needs a cloud connection to think. A camera takes a photo, sends it to a distant server, waits for an answer, then acts. But that model breaks down on a battlefield, inside a satellite, or in a remote factory where connectivity is weak and every watt of power counts.
CYRAN AI Solutions, founded in 2018 by IIT Delhi Professor Manan Suri, builds the hardware and software that lets AI run directly on the device. No server needed. No waiting. No connection required.
The secret is neuromorphic computing, hardware designed to mimic how brains work. Instead of shuffling data between separate memory and processing units like traditional chips do, everything happens in one place. That means dramatically less power and space, which matters enormously when your computer has to fit on a drone or orbit the Earth.
Cyran sells complete systems, not just chips. Their geospatial products process satellite and aerial imagery in real time, fusing data from more than 20 sensor types. Their industrial line spots manufacturing defects and predicts when equipment will fail. They even sell AI education kits to schools.
The company operates from IIT Delhi's Research and Innovation Park and draws on Suri's decade of research in non-volatile memory systems. Before returning to India, Suri worked at NXP Semiconductors in Belgium and France's CEA-LETI research institute. MIT Technology Review named him one of the world's top 35 innovators under 35 in 2018.

The Ripple Effect
India's defense establishment noticed early. Cyran won the government's iDEX innovation challenge in 2021 and the National Startup Technology Award the same year. In 2022, the defense minister personally awarded them for excellence in aerospace at DefExpo. The Indian Army has since contracted them to develop AI-based satellite imaging systems, though details remain classified.
The international validation came in June 2024, when France's Safran Aircraft Engines, a global aerospace leader, signed an agreement with Cyran to jointly develop AI solutions for manufacturing, maintenance, and operations. Safran announced it through their official channels. Cyran also partnered with Dutch neuromorphic chip maker Innatera at the same event.
The company hasn't disclosed funding amounts or revenues yet, and records show just one investment round from two unnamed backers. But the partnerships speak louder than the silence.
What Cyran has built matters beyond any single contract. They're proving that India can design and manufacture sovereign AI systems that don't depend on foreign export permissions or cloud infrastructure controlled elsewhere. Every chip they put in a satellite or sensor is one more piece of critical technology India controls completely.
For countries and companies that need AI to work in the hardest places, the cloud was never going to be the answer.
