Illinois Teen Wins $1K Church Scholarship for Faith Leadership
Kennedy Nevarez earned a $1,000 scholarship from her Bartlett church for years of service, singing, and mentoring younger students. She's heading to Valparaiso University this fall with four scholarships in hand.
A South Elgin High School graduate just proved that showing up and serving others can open doors you never expected.
Kennedy Nevarez received the second annual Senior High Scholarship Award from Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett this May, along with a $1,000 check to support her college dreams. The award recognizes graduating seniors who've actively participated in church life and service year after year.
Nevarez didn't just attend church. She sang with the worship band during Sunday services, volunteered at church and community service days, and served as a leader for the confirmation program, guiding younger students through their faith journey.
"This scholarship is more than just money," Nevarez said. "It's an opportunity to represent my church and a chance to continue my education with confidence in my future."
Pastor Kristian Johnson saw something special in Nevarez's approach to service. "Kennedy has a servant heart and positive energy that radiates from her faith. She inspires so many people in our church," he said.
Bob Esmail, director of Youth and Family Ministries, presented the scholarship during a Sunday service. The church council launched the annual fund to celebrate students who consistently show up for their community.
The Ripple Effect
Nevarez's dedication caught attention beyond her church walls too. Valparaiso University awarded her three additional scholarships: the Oliver W. and Emma W. Allen Scholarship, the Kretzmann Scholarship, and the Presidential Scholarship.
She'll study psychology and religion this fall, building on years of experience helping others grow in faith and confidence. Her leadership in the confirmation program gave her firsthand experience guiding young people through challenging questions and personal growth.
Church council president Steve Schwarz summed up the community's pride: "May God bless Kennedy in her dreams and aspirations for the future. Living Lord Church will keep her in prayer as she continues to grow in faith and learning."
Years of showing up, singing, serving, and leading others just launched one young woman toward a future where she can multiply that impact even further.
