India Adds 1,000+ Festival Trains for Family Reunions

Millions of Indian families will have an easier journey home this festive season thanks to a massive railway expansion announced this week.

North Central Railway is operating more than 1,000 special train trips between October 1 and November 30 to handle the rush during Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath. The two-month service expansion means passengers who couldn't get confirmed tickets can still make it home to celebrate with loved ones.

Dr. Shivam Sharma, the railway's chief public relations officer, said these "Trains on Demand" services could expand even further based on passenger needs. The railway is actively monitoring waiting lists and booking data to add more trips where demand is highest.

The special trains will connect 43 different routes across 13 railway zones, linking major destinations like Kolkata, New Delhi, Pune, and Gwalior. Some trains will run once during the period, while others will operate weekly or twice weekly depending on demand.

The railway isn't just adding trains. They're deploying extra staff at stations to manage crowds and help passengers navigate the busy season, plus ramping up cleaning efforts to keep stations and trains spotless during the rush.
