India Adds Record 48.6 GW of Renewable Energy in 2025

India's energy revolution hit a historic milestone in 2025, proving that one of the world's most populous nations can power up without burning the planet down.

The Reserve Bank of India reported that the country added a staggering 48.6 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity last year alone. That's more than triple what India managed just five years ago and represents enough power for tens of millions of homes.

Solar installations led the charge, backed by strong government support and eager private sector investors rushing to join the clean energy boom. Over the past five years, India's total installed power capacity has grown by 36%, with renewables driving nearly all of that expansion.

The numbers tell a striking story of transformation. Annual renewable additions jumped from just 5.6 GW in 2020 to 14.4 GW in 2021, then 16.4 GW in 2022. After a slight dip to 13 GW in 2023, momentum accelerated dramatically with 28.6 GW in 2024 before hitting the record 48.6 GW in 2025.

Meanwhile, fossil fuel capacity additions crept along at just 1 to 4 GW annually during the same period. The energy mix is shifting faster than many experts predicted.

India isn't putting all its eggs in one basket either. The country added modest nuclear capacity starting in 2023, signaling a diversified approach to clean energy. New initiatives like the SHANTI Bill and Nuclear Energy Mission aim to boost nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047.
