India and Africa Set May Summit on Innovation and Growth

Two regions representing over 2.5 billion people are joining forces to build a brighter future together, and the plans they're unveiling show just how powerful collaboration can be.

India will host the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit on May 31 in New Delhi, bringing together leaders from across the African continent. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the event will focus on "co-creation, joint innovation and long-term development" under the theme "IA SPIRIT: India Africa Strategic Partnership for Innovation, Resilience, and Inclusive Transformation."

The numbers tell a story of growing success. Trade between India and Africa topped $100 billion in 2024-25, and both sides have set an ambitious goal of $200 billion by 2030.

But this partnership goes far beyond economics. India has opened 17 new diplomatic missions across Africa in recent years, bringing the total to 46 and demonstrating a commitment to engaging with every corner of the continent.

The human impact shines through in educational and development initiatives. Thousands of African professionals have received training through India's technical cooperation programs. The Indian Institute of Technology now has a campus in Zanzibar, while Uganda hosts a National Forensic Sciences University campus and Rwanda has gained an Entrepreneurship Development Centre.

Jaishankar noted that both India's "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision and Africa's Agenda 2063 share the same goals: inclusive, sustainable, and people-centered development. These aren't just words on paper but roadmaps guiding real cooperation on the ground.

The partnership extends to global challenges too. African nations are joining India-led initiatives including the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuels Alliance, tackling climate change and building sustainable futures together.

The Ripple Effect

This summit represents something larger than trade deals or diplomatic meetings. When India successfully championed the African Union's inclusion as a permanent G20 member during its 2023 presidency, it shifted global power dynamics toward regions historically left out of major decisions.

The nearly three million members of the Indian diaspora across Africa serve as living bridges between the regions, strengthening cultural, social, and economic connections daily. Their presence turns policy partnerships into personal relationships.

Senior officials will meet on May 28, followed by foreign ministers on May 29, to finalize priority areas before the main summit. These working sessions will translate big visions into concrete action plans that improve lives.

As Jaishankar put it, this partnership sends "a message of stability in a turbulent world, of reliability in an uncertain one and of solidarity in difficult times," proving that nations can lift each other up while lifting themselves.
