India and Japan Launch AI Partnership for Indo-Pacific

Two of Asia's largest democracies just joined forces to shape the future of artificial intelligence in a way that puts people first.

India and Japan announced a comprehensive AI partnership on Thursday, committing to build safe, secure, and human-centric AI systems together. Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sanae Takaichi described AI as an era-defining technology reshaping economies, industries, and societies worldwide.

Both nations set an ambitious target of bringing 500 highly skilled Indian AI professionals to Japan by 2030. This exchange will strengthen innovation in both countries while addressing Japan's talent needs and India's job market opportunities.

The Ripple Effect spreads far beyond these two countries. India and Japan pledged to work with partners across the Indo-Pacific and Global South to promote AI capacity building, technical assistance, and knowledge sharing. The initiative aligns with India's MAHASAGAR vision and Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific strategy to build resilient economic ecosystems across the region.

The partnership emphasizes responsible development. Both countries committed to promoting inclusive AI while protecting children's safety, enhancing cybersecurity, and ensuring resilient AI supply chains. They'll coordinate through international forums including the G20, OECD, and United Nations to shape global AI governance.

Energy-conscious development matters too. The leaders pledged to promote efficient AI models, optimized computing, and green technology to reduce the environmental impact of AI systems. They'll collaborate on multilingual, open-source AI models for native languages and public-interest applications.

The agreement encourages governments, startups, corporations, and research institutions from both countries to identify real-world problems and develop AI solutions together. This practical approach ensures the technology serves actual human needs rather than just theoretical possibilities.

Japan will host the next AI Summit, continuing the momentum from the New Delhi AI Impact Summit. The vision of "AI for All" guides this partnership toward inclusive and sustainable development that benefits everyone, not just those in wealthy nations.
