India and Netherlands Launch Green Hydrogen Fellowship

A new partnership between India and the Netherlands is opening doors for researchers who want to solve one of climate change's toughest puzzles: how to clean up heavy industry.

India's Department of Science and Technology announced the India-Netherlands Hydrogen Fellowship Programme on February 6, creating opportunities for Indian doctoral students, postdocs, and faculty to train in advanced hydrogen ecosystems. The program focuses on real-world challenges like system integration, safety analysis, and making these technologies work at scale in India.

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of India's Department of Science and Technology, emphasized that international collaboration is essential for moving hydrogen technologies from the lab to actual deployment. The fellowship specifically targets hard-to-abate sectors like steel manufacturing and heavy transport, where switching to clean energy has proven most difficult.

The same day brought another milestone: 19 Indian Institutes of Technology signed a partnership agreement with the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The memorandum creates a framework for faculty exchanges, joint research projects, and knowledge sharing without requiring automatic financial commitments from participating institutions.

Deputy Ambassador Huib Mijnarends highlighted how perfectly aligned India and the Netherlands are on energy transition goals. Both countries are betting big on hydrogen as a solution for industries that can't easily switch to batteries or other renewable options.

Professor Jouke de Vries, President of the University of Groningen, stressed that sustained academic partnerships are critical for tackling global energy challenges. His university brings decades of hydrogen research experience that Indian researchers can now access directly.

This partnership reaches far beyond two countries sharing research notes. India is home to some of the world's most polluting industrial sectors, and it's racing to meet ambitious clean energy targets. Training hundreds of researchers in cutting-edge hydrogen technology means faster innovation and more affordable solutions.

The fellowship emphasizes life-cycle assessment and indigenization pathways, ensuring technologies can actually be manufactured and deployed affordably in India. That approach could create a blueprint for other developing nations facing similar challenges.
