India Breaks Ground on Nation's Largest Solar Plant

India is taking a giant leap toward energy independence with a massive new solar manufacturing plant that promises thousands of jobs and homegrown clean power technology.

Waaree Energies broke ground on a sprawling 300-acre facility in Nagpur that will become India's largest integrated solar ingot and wafer manufacturing complex. The $740 million project will produce the building blocks of solar panels, with capacity to support 10 gigawatts of solar energy annually.

That's enough manufacturing power to supply components for solar installations that could light up millions of homes. Right now, India imports most of these critical pieces from other countries, making its clean energy goals dependent on global supply chains.

The facility changes that equation. When it opens, more than 8,000 people will find work making high-purity solar ingots and wafers, the upstream components that eventually become the solar panels we see on rooftops and in energy farms.

Maharashtra's Chief Minister and other senior officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony, signaling how seriously India takes this shift. The country wants to build what Waaree chairman Hitesh Doshi calls "strong domestic manufacturing capabilities across the solar value chain."

Nagpur earned the project because of its central location and strong connections across India. The city's industrial ecosystem made it ideal for a manufacturing operation this ambitious.

This factory does more than just create jobs in one city. It strengthens India's entire approach to clean energy by reducing dependence on imports and building expertise at home.

Waaree Energies already operates facilities with 22.3 gigawatts of solar module capacity and works in more than 25 countries. This new plant pushes them further up the manufacturing chain, making the raw materials instead of just assembling finished products.
