Solar Park and Ride Near M4 to Power 440 Homes Annually

A commuter parking lot near the M4 motorway is about to become a clean energy powerhouse that pays for itself.

Wokingham Borough Council has approved an ambitious solar charging scheme at Mereoak Park and Ride, just south of Reading near junction 11. The facility will feature solar canopies covering the parking area, generating renewable electricity while protecting cars from the elements.

The numbers tell an impressive story. The solar installation will produce enough clean energy annually to power more than 440 homes or provide 150,000 electric vehicle charges through a mix of rapid and standard chargers.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with a contractor currently being selected. The 600-space parking facility will remain open throughout the build, with work happening in phases to keep disruption minimal for the thousands of commuters who rely on it.

The updated plans now include a battery energy storage system alongside the expanded charging infrastructure. This addition means the facility can store excess solar power and release it when demand peaks, making the whole system more efficient and reliable.

The Ripple Effect

This project does more than just charge cars. It's designed to generate at least £400,000 in net income every year over the next 25 years, money that will flow directly back into frontline council services like schools, social care, and community programs.

Councillor Imogen Shepherd-DuBey called it "a win-win for the borough and its residents," noting that even people who never use the chargers will benefit from the revenue supporting essential services. The council is actively seeking additional grants and external funding to maximize the project's impact.
