India Friends Turn 500 Tonnes of Trash Into Notebooks

Naren Raj and Ashutosh Ananth looked at India's mountains of discarded office paper and saw something nobody else did: a notebook business that people would come back to again and again.

The childhood friends from Bengaluru started with a different idea in 2019. They launched plantable stationery with seeds embedded inside that customers could plant after use, and even landed early corporate orders that felt promising.

But the novelty wore off fast. Customers appreciated the concept once, then never reordered, and the friends realized a business built on one-time purchases wasn't really a business at all.

Then COVID-19 changed everything. Offices shut down overnight, but hospitals desperately needed paper supplies, and in that gap between collapsing demand and urgent need, the pair spotted their real opportunity.

In 2021, they launched Rescript with a sharp focus on recycled copier paper and notebooks. Not novelty items people admire once, but everyday products they need constantly.

The technical challenge was real. Recycled paper has always had a reputation for being rough and unreliable, jamming printers and tearing easily.

Rescript developed their own process to balance pulp and water ratios perfectly, producing sheets smooth enough for modern printers. They collect discarded paper, sort it, pulp it, and press it into fresh sheets without using any bleaching agents at all.

The natural off-white color isn't a flaw. It's a visible reminder of how the paper was actually made.

The Ripple Effect

The numbers tell a compelling story. Rescript has recycled over 500 tonnes of waste paper, saved more than 9,200 trees, and conserved over 18.4 million litres of water.

The company has prevented more than 431,000 kilograms of carbon emissions. What started as two friends running a small operation has grown into a multi-crore business selling through offices, schools, and online retail nationwide.

Their appearance on Shark Tank India Season 4, seeking Rs 1 crore for 3.33% equity at a Rs 30 crore valuation, pushed the brand far beyond its Bengaluru roots.

The founders didn't chase trendy pivots or invent flashy new categories. They built a business on the unglamorous insight that sustainable products only survive if people need to buy them repeatedly, not admire them once.

Turning boring office waste into notebooks people use daily isn't the flashiest startup story, but it's exactly the kind that lasts.
