India Hits Record Low Solar Price of Rs 3.12 Per Unit

India just made clean energy cheaper than ever before. The country's electricity regulator approved record-low solar power prices of Rs 3.12 per kilowatt-hour, making renewable energy more affordable than coal in many regions.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission approved the tariffs for 1,200 megawatts of solar projects paired with massive battery systems. That's enough power to light up over a million homes, available day and night thanks to energy storage.

Four companies won contracts through a competitive bidding process that attracted 24 bids totaling 6,150 MW of proposed capacity. The Solar Energy Corporation of India ran the auction in January 2026, with results finalized in September.

NLC India Renewables secured the largest chunk with 600 MW at the lowest price of Rs 3.12 per kWh. Engie Energy India won 200 MW at the same rate, while RPIL Power Three and Oriana Power captured the remaining capacity at just one paisa more.

What makes this breakthrough special is the inclusion of battery storage systems. These aren't just solar panels that work only when the sun shines. The projects include 600 MW of batteries that can store 3,600 megawatt-hours of energy, delivering power reliably around the clock.

The pricing represents a major milestone for India's clean energy transition. Just five years ago, solar power with storage would have cost nearly double this amount. Technology improvements and fierce competition have driven costs down dramatically.

The Ripple Effect

This price breakthrough will accelerate India's shift away from fossil fuels faster than many experts predicted. Distribution companies can now buy clean, reliable power that's cheaper than building new coal plants and cleaner than running existing ones.

The rock-bottom prices could trigger a domino effect across South Asia and beyond. Other countries watching India's success may fast-track their own renewable energy programs, knowing that clean power has become the economical choice, not just the environmental one.

Lower electricity costs will benefit Indian households and businesses directly. Manufacturing companies can access cheaper power while meeting sustainability goals, and rural areas can get reliable electricity without expensive fuel transportation.
