India Honors 5 Legends with Top Civilian Award

Five individuals who devoted their lives to excellence have received India's Padma Vibhushan, the nation's second-highest civilian honor reserved for exceptional service.

The 2026 recipients represent the full spectrum of Indian achievement. Dharmendra Singh Deol, one of Hindi cinema's most beloved actors, received the honor posthumously for a screen career that made him a household name across generations.

From the courtroom comes K T Thomas, a former Supreme Court judge recognized for his distinguished judicial career. N Rajam, the celebrated Hindustani classical violinist from Uttar Pradesh, earned recognition for both mastering her instrument and teaching others to do the same.

P Narayanan of Kerala was honored in literature and education. V S Achuthanandhan, the veteran left leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala, received a posthumous honor for his decades in public service.

The Padma Vibhushan stands apart from India's other civilian honors by design. While the Padma Shri recognizes distinguished service and the Padma Bhushan honors service of a high order, the Padma Vibhushan celebrates exceptional and distinguished service at the summit of achievement.

Only five people received the honor this year, making it the most selective of India's Padma awards. The recognition typically arrives late in life or posthumously, serving as a summation of an entire career rather than a single accomplishment.
