
India Invests $533M in Floating Solar on Water
India just approved a half-billion dollar plan to build solar panels on water instead of land, a clever solution that saves space while powering millions of homes. The country plans to install 5,000 megawatts of floating solar farms on lakes and reservoirs by 2031.
India is turning its reservoirs and lakes into massive floating power plants, and the plan just got a $533 million boost from the government.
The new program, called Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana, will support 5,000 megawatts of solar panels that float on water instead of taking up precious farmland. That's enough clean energy to power millions of homes while leaving the land underneath free for farming, wildlife, and communities.
The floating solar farms will come paired with battery storage systems that can save power for at least two hours. This means the energy captured during sunny days can light up homes after sunset, making the power grid more reliable even when the sun goes down.
Projects will roll out between 2026 and 2031, with the government offering generous support to make them happen. Developers can receive $120,000 per megawatt once their floating solar farms are up and running, plus up to $60,000 per project just to cover the planning studies needed to get started safely.

India is already a pioneer in this technology with 700 megawatts of floating solar already installed. But the country's National Institute of Solar Energy recently discovered something exciting: India has enough suitable water bodies to support over 102,000 megawatts of floating solar potential, more than 20 times what this new program targets.
The timing couldn't be better. As India's energy needs grow, finding space for massive solar farms has become challenging in densely populated regions. Floating solar solves this puzzle elegantly by using surfaces that were just sitting there unused.

This initiative does more than generate clean electricity. By placing solar panels on water, evaporation decreases, helping conserve precious water resources in a country where droughts are a real concern. The water also keeps the solar panels cooler, making them work more efficiently than their land-based cousins.
