India Leads World in AI Workforce Transformation

One in three Indian professionals is already working alongside AI agents to complete complex, multi-step work tasks. That's double the global average and the highest rate anywhere in the world, according to Microsoft's 2026 Work Trend Index.

The study surveyed 20,000 AI users across 10 countries and found India leading a quiet revolution in how work actually happens. These "frontier professionals" aren't just using AI for basic tasks. They're designing and managing sophisticated automated workflows while keeping human judgment at the center.

Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, put it simply: "One in three Indian professionals using AI is working with agents on multi-step, real work. Globally it's one in six. That's not a gap, that's a lead."

Nearly 8 in 10 Indian workers say AI enables work that was impossible just 12 months ago, rising to 85% among frontier professionals. But here's the surprising part: even as automation grows more powerful, Indian workers aren't stepping back.

Almost two-thirds of Indian AI users rank quality control of automated outputs as a critical skill, compared to half globally. Nearly 9 in 10 insist they remain fully responsible for the thinking, treating AI-generated material as merely a starting point.

The Ripple Effect

India's major IT firms are proving this isn't just talk. Infosys, TCS, Wipro, and LTIMindtree have collectively licensed over 400,000 seats of Microsoft 365 Copilot in under six months.

The results speak for themselves. TCS reports productivity gains of 20 to 25% in research and content production, with process cycle times dropping 25 to 35%. Wipro is saving 250,000 full-time-equivalent days per quarter, with usage rates exceeding 95%.

At Infosys, 91% of licensed employees actively use the technology monthly across delivery, engineering, and corporate divisions. Employees at Wipro have created over 29,000 custom AI agents to solve specific problems.

What's driving this success? Culture matters. More than 4 in 10 Indian workers say their company leaders have a clear, unified AI plan, nearly double the global average. One in four Indian organizations reward employees for workflow reinvention even without immediate commercial results, compared to just one in eight globally.

Balakrishna D.R., Executive Vice President at Infosys, explained the secret: "Building a frontier enterprise requires more than technology. Organizations that are realizing sustainable value from AI are those that combine leadership alignment, workforce readiness, governance, and intelligence embedded across the business."
