India Nails 3 Key Tests for First Crewed Space Mission

India is one giant leap closer to joining the elite club of nations that send humans to space.

The Indian Space Research Organisation announced Sunday it successfully completed three major safety tests for its Gaganyaan crew module. These tests prove the spacecraft can protect astronauts during the most dangerous part of any space mission: coming home.

The first test tackled a crucial question: what happens if the crew module tips over after splashing down in the ocean? ISRO developed a special uprighting system using stored cold gas to inflate flotation devices. The system worked perfectly, automatically flipping the module upright to keep astronauts safe and comfortable while rescue teams arrive.

The second test verified that the crew module can cleanly separate from its service module during the fiery descent through Earth's atmosphere. This umbilical mechanism acts like a carefully choreographed breakup, disconnecting in two stages to ensure nothing damages the crew capsule. The separation happened exactly as planned, with the module remaining structurally sound.

The third test confirmed that the protective apex cover, which shields the parachute system during flight, separates correctly before the parachutes deploy. Without this cover popping off at precisely the right moment, the parachutes can't slow the crew module's descent.
