India Opens 2.2 GW Solar Cell Factory in Uttar Pradesh

India's solar industry just gained serious manufacturing muscle with the opening of a massive new factory that will pump out enough solar cells to power millions of homes.

Alpex Solar opened its 2.2 gigawatt solar cell factory in the Kosi Kotwan Industrial Area in Mathura district, Uttar Pradesh. The 900,000-square-foot facility will manufacture advanced TOPCon solar cells, a newer technology that converts sunlight to electricity more efficiently than older designs.

The factory transforms Alpex Solar from a company that assembles panels into one that makes the crucial components inside them. CEO Aditya Sehgal called it an important milestone in the company's evolution from module maker to fully integrated renewable energy manufacturer.

This vertical integration means better control over quality and the ability to respond faster when market needs change. Monica Sehgal, whole-time director at Alpex Solar, explained that owning more of the production process gives the company greater control over critical inputs and technology.

The facility will produce G12R TOPCon cells specifically, which represent the latest generation of solar technology. These cells use a special tunnel oxide layer that reduces energy loss and boosts overall performance compared to standard solar cells.

The Ripple Effect

This factory does more than just make solar panels. It strengthens India's domestic solar supply chain at a time when the country is racing to meet ambitious renewable energy targets.

By manufacturing locally, India reduces its dependence on imported solar components and keeps more jobs and expertise at home. The facility joins other Alpex Solar manufacturing sites in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh as part of a broader expansion.

The company plans to add five more manufacturing units across Greater Noida, Kosi Kotwan, and Madhya Pradesh. Together, these facilities will create a robust regional hub for solar manufacturing that can serve India's growing appetite for clean energy.

India's solar market continues expanding rapidly as the country works toward its goal of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. Facilities like this new factory provide the building blocks to make that ambitious target possible.
