India Robot Competition Offers $9M in Student Funding

Students across India now have a shot at millions of dollars in funding to turn their robotics dreams into reality through a competition that believes young minds can solve tomorrow's biggest challenges today.

ROBOFEST Gujarat 6.0 opens its doors to students from 9th grade through graduate school, inviting them to design autonomous robots and AI systems that tackle real problems. The competition runs until August 2026 and covers everything from underwater exploration vehicles to aerial drones navigating minefields.

The event splits into three main tracks. Junior competitors from schools and technical institutes can build AI-powered humanoid robots, autonomous driving systems, or athletic robots. Senior university students tackle more complex challenges like creating underwater vehicles for marine research or intelligent ground vehicles for autonomous navigation. A special hackathon category welcomes all levels to develop AI robotics solutions for social good, industrial efficiency, or environmental protection.

What makes this competition special is the serious funding behind it. Junior level winners can earn up to 5 million rupees (about $60,000) for their prototypes, while senior teams compete for prizes up to 10 million rupees (roughly $120,000). The total prize pool exceeds 750 million rupees, or around $9 million.

Every team needs a faculty mentor to guide them through technical development and prototype creation. This requirement ensures students get proper support while building real-world skills that extend beyond textbooks.

The competition rewards projects at three stages: ideation, proof of concept, and working prototype. This structure helps teams progress from sketches to functional robots, with funding at each milestone to keep innovation moving forward.

The Ripple Effect

Beyond prize money, ROBOFEST offers five special awards worth $60,000 each, recognizing achievements like best social impact solution and women in robotics excellence. These awards highlight how robotics innovation can drive positive change across communities.

The competition particularly encourages solutions for humanitarian support, education access, and environmental challenges. Past categories have inspired students to think beyond typical engineering problems and consider how their robots might help people in need or protect natural resources.

By inviting students as young as 14 to participate, the program plants seeds of innovation early. Young competitors who start in junior categories can return year after year, building skills and ambition as they advance through education levels.

The hackathon component sweetens the deal with 100 ideation awards, ensuring even early-stage concepts get recognition and encouragement. This approach tells students their ideas matter, even before building a single prototype.
