India Startup Cools 45°C Heat Using 85% Less Power

Air conditioning might be the only product we buy that makes the problem it's supposed to solve even worse.

In India, where temperatures now regularly cross 45°C, millions of factory workers, students, and small business owners can't afford conventional cooling. Those who can are unknowingly heating the planet with refrigerant gases hundreds of times more potent than CO2 and energy consumption that strains the grid.

Tiger Aster, an engineer from Hyderabad, couldn't walk past this contradiction. He'd spent years watching people work through brutal summers on factory floors and in classrooms where heat destroyed productivity, health, and basic dignity.

In 2022, he and co-founder Jeeten Desai launched Ambiator with a bold goal: keep India cool without destroying the planet. They bootstrapped the entire venture, bringing 45 combined years of engineering and business expertise to a crisis they believed was both moral and urgent.

Their solution works like a sophisticated version of a clay pot keeping water cold. Instead of compressing refrigerant gases like a traditional AC, Ambiator's system uses Dew Point Regenerative Evaporative Cooling to pull in 100% fresh outdoor air and cool it through evaporation physics.

The result is remarkable. Even when temperatures outside hit 45°C, the units deliver fresh air at a comfortable 24 to 28°C, right within India's recommended thermal comfort range.

The real breakthrough is efficiency. Each unit draws just one kilowatt of power compared to the 6.5 kilowatts a conventional AC system needs for the same cooling output. It runs on standard electrical connections, so businesses don't need expensive upgrades to install it.

The technology is already making life better across multiple Indian cities. Workers who once endured suffocating heat now have access to cooling that doesn't cost the earth, literally or financially.

For small businesses operating on thin margins, the electricity savings alone can transform viability. For the planet, every unit installed means less strain on the power grid, zero refrigerant leaks, and dramatically lower carbon emissions.

The timing couldn't be more critical. The IPCC predicts that by 2050, parts of India will regularly see temperatures above 50°C. Traditional air conditioning at that scale would be both environmentally catastrophic and economically impossible for most Indians.
