Scientists from India's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and KIIT University designed the facility. They developed a patented process that recovers multiple valuable products from each batch of waste.

By recovering these materials from existing waste, India can reduce its dependence on imports while cleaning up pollution. The country produces millions of tons of fly ash and red mud annually, creating both an environmental challenge and an untapped resource.

The extracted alumina serves as the main ingredient for aluminum production. Recovering it from waste instead of mining new bauxite ore makes the entire supply chain more efficient.

National Aluminium Company Limited supported both projects as part of India's push toward resource independence and a circular economy. Chairman Brijendra Pratap Singh says the pilot plants represent a critical step from laboratory research to commercial production.

The fly ash facility will also produce concentrated rare earth materials for further research. Scientists will use these samples to develop better separation and purification methods, advancing the entire field.

If these pilots succeed, they could be scaled up across India and exported worldwide, helping other nations turn their industrial waste into valuable resources while building a cleaner future.
