Indian Teacher Wins $1M Prize for 800 Learning Murals

A teacher who turns broken walls into vibrant outdoor classrooms has won the $1 million Global Teacher Prize, proving that education can happen anywhere when creativity meets compassion.

Rouble Nagi from India received the prestigious award at the World Governments Summit in Dubai, recognized for creating more than 800 open-air learning centers across her country's most marginalized communities. What started as a single project in a Mumbai slum two decades ago has blossomed into a nationwide movement bringing education to children who need it most.

Her "Living Walls of Learning" are far more than beautiful artwork. Each interactive mural teaches literacy, math, science, hygiene, history, and environmental awareness while fostering community pride in neighborhoods that often feel forgotten.

Nagi travels across India working directly with children and has trained over 600 volunteer and paid educators to continue her mission. Through her Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, she's created flexible learning schedules and vocational programs using recycled materials, helping kids gain confidence and critical thinking skills.

The results speak volumes. Her programs have cut dropout rates by more than 50% and dramatically improved literacy and numeracy in communities facing poverty, child labor, and inadequate infrastructure.
