Indiana Museum Turns Kindness Into Veterans' Stories

The Clay Township Military Library & Museum didn't get the turnout they hoped for during their Acts of Kindness Day event in August 2026. But what the day lacked in numbers, it made up for in heart.

Veterans and visitors sat down at the museum's Story Capture station to share memories through simple prompts. They recalled acts of kindness they received while serving and after coming home. Some wrote their stories privately on clipboard forms while others shared theirs in conversation with volunteers.

Visitors also created nearly a dozen handmade thank-you cards for local veterans. Each card was crafted by Cathy Zink, a longtime museum supporter who donates them to support the museum's revitalization. The cards count toward the community goal of 1,976 acts of kindness set by Carmel's Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

One card will go to Jules Goudy, a 101-year-old World War II veteran who recently shared his service story with museum volunteers. After giving so much of his own memories, he'll receive a small token of gratitude in return.

The day brought new faces too. Two volunteers from the City of Carmel Volunteer Program joined in: Brittney Zhang, a local high school student, and Tina Mangos, a creative arts teacher and Carmel Arts Commission member. Both greeted visitors and helped bring warmth to the day's conversations.

Then came the surprise. Jessica Bricking, owner of Carmel Glass & Mirror, stopped by with a $500 donation for the all-volunteer museum. Her company has supported the museum for years as a nearby corporate neighbor, and her continued generosity reminded the small team why their work matters.

The museum's event happened to fall on the 236th birthday of the United States Coast Guard, adding extra meaning to a day already centered on remembering and honoring service. The all-volunteer team at this small museum proves that preserving veterans' stories doesn't require massive events or perfect timing. It just needs people who show up and listen. Every story captured, every card written, and every act of kindness becomes part of something larger: a living record of gratitude that will outlast any single day.

Some days measure their success in numbers, but this one measured it in moments that matter.
