India's First Dengue Vaccine Arrives in 2027

India is about to get a powerful new tool in the fight against dengue fever, and it couldn't come soon enough.

Takeda's Qdenga vaccine will hit India's private healthcare market in the first half of 2027, following approval from India's drug authority in July 2026. Dr. Reddy's Laboratories will distribute the vaccine to clinics and hospitals across the country for people aged 4 to 60.

This marks a historic first for India, where dengue cases have exploded over the past two decades. The mosquito-borne illness now affects communities in every corner of the country, with reported cases increasing elevenfold since the early 2000s.

The vaccine works by protecting against all four types of dengue virus circulating in India. Research shows that 1 in 14 patients actually gets infected with multiple dengue strains at once, making broad protection critical.

Qdenga requires just two shots given three months apart. It's already being used in other countries and now brings that same protection to India's 1.4 billion people.

Dr. Reddy's will handle private market distribution, making the vaccine available to families who can access it through their healthcare providers. Meanwhile, Takeda is working toward the bigger goal of getting Qdenga into India's public immunization program, which would reach far more people.

A parliamentary health committee has already recommended considering dengue vaccines for the national program. That recognition signals how serious the dengue challenge has become for India's public health system.
