India's New Sleeper Train Cuts Mumbai-Bengaluru Trip by 6 Hours

😊 Feel Good

India just announced its second overnight Vande Bharat Sleeper train, connecting two major cities with faster, more comfortable travel. The new service builds on success from the country's first sleeper train, which already saves passengers six hours.

Travelers between India's tech hub and financial capital are about to get a major upgrade to their overnight journey.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this weekend that a new Vande Bharat Sleeper train will soon connect Bengaluru and Mumbai. The service promises to make the long-distance route faster and more comfortable for millions of passengers who travel between these economic powerhouses each year.

The announcement came as Vaishnaw virtually flagged off a new express train between the two cities. He called it the fulfillment of "long-pending demands" from communities across Karnataka.

The sleeper train represents a significant leap forward for Indian rail travel. Built by BEML using technology from Chennai's Integral Coach Factory, the distinctive orange and grey train will run between KSR Bengaluru and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

This marks India's second Vande Bharat Sleeper service. The first launched in January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya, immediately cutting travel time by up to six hours between those cities.

The new route will serve far more than just its endpoints. Passengers traveling through Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, and Pune will all benefit from improved connectivity.

The Ripple Effect

Karnataka is becoming a hub for modern rail infrastructure. The state now operates 12 pairs of Vande Bharat trains covering 14 districts, connecting communities that previously faced longer, less comfortable journeys.

The railway ministry is testing routes to Mangaluru next, which will strengthen coastal connectivity all the way to Madgaon. Since 2014, Karnataka has gained 1,750 kilometers of new railway lines.

Investment in the system continues growing. Plans include a new Vande Bharat Sleeper maintenance depot costing 270 crore rupees, plus a chair car facility in Bengaluru for an additional 52.73 crore rupees.

The Hassan-Mangaluru electrification work recently wrapped up and is now in testing phase. Each completed section brings cleaner, quieter trains to more communities.

For the millions who travel between India's major cities for work, family, and opportunity, faster and more comfortable overnight trains mean arriving fresher and spending less time in transit.
