India's Startups Create 2.3 Million Jobs in a Decade

India's bet on innovation is paying off in a big way. The country's startup scene just crossed 223,000 recognized companies, collectively employing more than 2.3 million people directly since the Startup India initiative launched a decade ago.

The numbers tell a story of explosive growth. In the financial year ending March 2026, India welcomed 55,200 new startups, the highest annual addition since the program began. That represents a 51.6 percent jump from the previous year.

These aren't just tech companies clustered in a few cities. Startups have spread across every state and union territory in India, with Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Gujarat leading the charge.

The government has backed this movement with serious funding. Through the Fund of Funds program, over 7,000 crore rupees (roughly $840 million) has flowed to 135 investment funds, which then invested 26,900 crore rupees (about $3.2 billion) into more than 1,420 startups. A second fund worth 10,000 crore rupees has already been announced to keep the momentum going.

Newer entrepreneurs are getting support too. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme has selected 219 incubators and committed 945 crore rupees, with over 605 crore rupees already approved for more than 3,400 early-stage startups.

Innovation is becoming part of India's DNA. Startups filed more than 19,400 patent applications total, with filings jumping from 2,850 to over 4,480 in just one year. That's a 57 percent increase in companies protecting their original ideas.

The government is also putting its money where its policies are. Through the Government e-Marketplace platform, over 38,600 startups have been onboarded to sell directly to public sector buyers, opening up a massive new revenue stream.
